Students | Life at PUC Schools
At PUC schools, students will find that teachers provide lessons that are challenging, engaging and interesting. Students will also find that teachers and administrators are very caring and very determined that each and every student will be successful! All PUC schools follow a traditional school calendar. In order to insure student success, the school day in most of the PUC Schools is slightly longer than in the surrounding public schools. In addition, classes are smaller than the traditional public schools. There are 25 students in each middle school class and approximately 20 students in each high school class. The overall size of each middle school is 300 students or less and the high schools typically have 100 students or less at each grade level. The smaller school size allows staff to get to know each and every student and his/her family very well. It also allows teachers to be able to identify and fill learning gaps that students are experiencing, very quickly. The smaller school size also means that students, their families and the staff develop a strong sense of "community".
Students work together and support each other in order to insure success for everybody. Counselors are available at every PUC school site to assist students and their parents with the challenges presented by adolescence and the middle and high school years, if requested. Parents are encouraged and expected to take an active role in the learning of their children and in the activities of the school. We consider parents to be our most important partners in the education of the children. PUC Schools consider the arts to be an essential part of the learning experience. Therefore, in addition to the traditional core classes, students also experience classes in a variety of arts areas at every grade level. Students also engage in effective and enjoyable physical education programs. A variety of extended day programs, including but not limited to team sports, homework clubs and additional arts classes are provided at each school site. Specific programs vary from site to site. The vision of all PUC schools is that all students will graduate from high school prepared to be successful in college. Everybody works very hard to achieve that vision! At some PUC middle schools, incoming 6th grade students spend several days on a college campus during the summer preceding the beginning of their 6th grade year. At the high schools, most students take college classes simultaneously with their high school course work. These experiences and more help students understand and achieve the vision and mission of PUC Schools!
