Programs | Athletics
Since the opening of our first school in 1999, a variety of athletics and team sports programs have been developed at the school sites. We view our students holistically and believe that if a student is physically healthy and fit, the student's learning and academic achievement will be enhanced. Therefore, we strive to instill a commitment to health and fitness in our students. In addition, we believe that the school experience should provide each student with a variety of activities and opportunities, including physical education and team sports.
In order to accomplish these goals, we provide engaging and creative physical education programs at each of the school sites during the regular instructional day. Our physical education teachers serve as positive role models for our students and provide them with a myriad of athletic experiences that are health enhancing, relaxing and enjoyable. In addition, our physical education programs enhance our students' skills in the areas of working collaboratively and in teams. Numerous competitive team sports programs are also offered at the PUC schools. These teams practice and play after the regular school day, in a variety of leagues. The specific composition and variety of team sports programs is unique to each school. For example, CALS Early College High School offers CIF football and basketball. Community Charter Early College High School offers CIF soccer and basketball teams. Each of the middle schools also offer a variety of team sports programs. To find out about the sports offerings at a specific site, please contact the school office.
Boys Basketball and Girls Basketball
The CCECHS basketball teams are joining CIF as affiliate members beginning in the 2006-2007 school year. The squads have competed in an informal charter school league for the past two years as well as in the ARC Hoops off season leagues. The boys have played in both the St. Genevieve Freshman Tournament and Royal High School Sophomore Tournaments while the girls played in the Saugus High School Winter Tournament last year.
Soccer
CCECHS Soccer is on the move. The team began with participation in the San Fernando Valley Masaya League and is set to join CIF as an affiliate member in the 2006-2007 school year. The soccer team enters its third year and has played an assortment of charter schools and also traveled to San Diego last year to participate in the Poway Soccer Tournament.
Golf
CCECHS has offered a Golf Academy at El Cariso Golf Course in Sylmar to students of the valley PUC schools for the past two years. This summer, a dozen dedicated student athletes participated in the first ever summer school golf elective. From interest and skills developed during these ventures, CCECS is set to form a coed golf team in the spring of 2006-2007.
Softball
CCECHS started an after school softball club last year and plans to continue developing that club in 2006-2007 with plans to formalize a team in the near future.
