In 2003, Ms. Elliot and Mr. Rodriquez launched the California Academy for Liberal Studies Early College High School (grades 9-12). This school was a response to community calls for a high school that offered the same personalized and rigorous learning environment as the middle schools, with the explicit goal of high school graduation and college success for every student. The school design is innovative in two key respects: The first area is the physical location of the school itself. CALS High is situated inside a high-rise office building, on the 4th floor, in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. The second is the school's early college high school model (established at all existing and future PUC high schools), which sets a requirement that all students at the school take at least one course each semester at a local community college.
