In 2000, after having spent a year assisting Jacqueline Elliot with the development and start-up of CCMS, Ref Rodriquez started California Academy for Liberal Studies (CALS) to serve middle school students (grades 6-8) in northeast Los Angeles. The school operates under principles consistent with those established at Community Charter Middle School: total devotion to students, small class sizes, extensive exposure to the arts, and personalized and nurturing assistance. These principles have yielded results similar to those at Community Charter. The school has scored a 9 and 10 on the API for "similar school comparisons" for the last four years in a row and has built up an extensive waiting list of prospective students.
