In 2000, California Academy for Liberal Studies (CALS) opened its doors to serve middle school students (grades 6-8) in northeast Los Angeles. The school operates under principles consistent with those established at Community Charter Middle School: total devotion to students, small class sizes, extensive exposure to the arts, and personalized and nurturing assistance. These principles have yielded results similar to those at Community Charter. The school has consistently scored a 9 and 10 on the API for "similar school comparisons" and has built up an extensive waiting list of prospective students.
